MECHANICAL SCIENCE

Report assignment

Another assignment as usual, late blog: This assignment is actually due Monday, January the 27th 2014.

We were group together of four to three people in one group to work out and find equilibrium practically on a force table, which is a table that is used to find angle of weigh that is in equilibrium. it is more complicated than it sounds.

The report were ask after completion of the experiments carried out during the practical.

The report ask if whether the experiment proves the theory of equilibrium in this case,
the sum x-component and y-component are zero that the object is balanced or at equilibrium.

It also ask to reproduce the data collected from the practical experiments and tabulate the data properly. Below shows partial of our group report.

Experiment 1
In this trial will only use the weight hanger to obtain equilibrium without adding other weights.
Trial 1
Calculation

Pulley 2
x-component
y-component
= 120°- 90° = 30°

= 0.59 Cos30°
= 0.59 Sin30°
= 0.51N
= 0.295 N
Pulley 3
x-component
y-component
= 270°- 237° = 33°

= 0.59 Cos33°
= 0.59 Sin33°
= -0.49 N
= 0.32 N

The table below shows the data and results from the experiment:
(Force = Mass X 9.81m/s2)

MASS(Kg)
FORCE(N)
ANGLE(°)
X-COMPONENT
Y-COMPONENT

Pulley 3

The verdict is that through the experiments, in total of three experiment (which we were ask to do) is that all the results of both x and y-components are equal to zero thus proving the theory above to be true.

On other note:
Regarding my Engineering drawing, our instructor pointed out lots of mistakes made in our drawing (he never taught us how to do it in a professional way, anyway), so the assignment's deadline has been extended to 30th of January.
